Matthew Bender is asking its customers to pay for all
subscriptions to titles before receiving the releases. This
requires an initial expenditure on Matthew Bender titles that
amounts to a large percentage of our budget, leaving greatly
diminished funds for the remaining subscriptions. It would seem
that this would restrict our ability to make decisions in times
of fiscal difficulty with regard to maintaining or deleting
titles, or at least place the burden unfairly on the remaining
publishers.
Matthew Bender indicates that, so far, their clientele have not
had a problem with this new subscription policy. I was wondering
if this was truly the case. Are law libraries able to deal with
this situation as readily as Matthew Bender implies, or are
others balking at this policy? I would especially like to hear
from other court libraries and public law libraries, though any
responses would be greatly appreciated.
