Available immediately. Responsibilities: Assists the Public Services
Librarian in supervising the department's paraprofessional and student
staff in order to enhance the delivery of services to the Library's
clientele which includes faculty, students, attorneys and the general
public. Participates in the direct provision of public services to the
Library's clientele and assumes primary responsibility for circulation and
for ILL and database searching for the faculty. Participates in planning
and developing public services for law library clientele. Required: MLS
from ALA-approved library school; excellent communication,
interpersonal and task-management skills. Strong service orientation.
Preferred: law library experience and working knowledge of legal
bibliography and current information technology, such as PC-based
networked environments, library automation systems, LEXIS-NEXIS,
WESTLAW, DIALOG and the Internet. Salary: commensurate with

Campus and community: Whittier College was founded in 1887
and the Law School was established in 1975. The School is fully
accredited by both the ABA and the AALS, with a faculty of 28 and 625
students in full and part-time programs. Whittier Law School is currently
located in the prestigious Hancock Park area in Los Angeles, adjacent to
Beverly Hills. After the spring semester of 1997, construction and
renovation will be completed on a much larger facility. At that time, the
faculty, students and staff will take up residence in the facility, located in
Orange County, near the city of Irvine, CA ("safest city in the U.S.").
Library environment: The Library has over 250,000 volumes
(including microforms) and receives 3700 current serials. The Library
staff is composed of 8 professionals, 7 paraprofessionals and 3.5 FTE
support staff. All of the professionals have an MLS degree (or
international equivalent) and 3 staff members possess the JD or another
advanced degree. The Library seeks to provide a collegial,
non-hierarchical environment in which staff members have regular
opportunities to design, propose and implement new systems and
procedures. The Library utilizes a PC-based local area network with
access to local CD-ROM drives, the Internet and the current library online
system. In addition, the Library is participating with a subsidiary of West
Publishing in the design and implementation of a new integrated library
system.
