So far I have received 18 (!) responses to my comment that putting
stamps on books was an unnecessary defacing-- all 18 patiently explaining why
I was wrong. The consensus is that stamps help prevent misidentification (of
the correct library) and theft.
Regarding the identification problem, you might consider putting a stamp
on the inside cover, which doesn't diminish the value of the book.
Regarding theft, I think only the wimpiest crook would be deterred by a
stamp, but then again, I'm from Chicago.
Anyway, I may be overly sensitive about resale value, since that's our
business. Most people don't buy books planning to sell them, but when the
time comes, good looking books have real value..
