At least one purpose: Return to correct owners.

Those of us who work in law libraries which
circulate items to firms which have collections of their
own can return items brought to the library be mistake
when there is a stamp which indicates who it should be
returned to--right now I have on my shelf several books
which were returned to the library by mistake, which
have no markings and I don't know who to contact.

Likewise--if one of our books is returned to the wrong library
they know who it belongs to and can return it because
it is marked.
