Bravo! The last salary survey was instrumental in helping me to secure
a 13% raise from my former employer, so when it comes right down to
it, paying for the survey out of my own pocket would have been well
worth the small investment.

Before we jump to conclusions that we are paying too much for our
publications, let's look at the value that we are receiving in each of
these. I know someone will straighten out the misinformation about the
Membership Directory so I don't need to. However, the salary survey is
the best bit of information about our profession's salaries that has ever
been put out. Some were saying that their firm would not pay for it.
Then let's dig a bit in our own pocket to have a copy to use to assist
our own staff or ourselves to raise salaries. If we need this
information to raise consciousness in our firms or schools, then we may
need to pay for it. Attorneys are beginning to value information. We
are preaching value and how it is not free. That means we must believe
ourselves. The same goes for the price index. I may need that to
justify my budget. If it costs money but it helps me to help my firm, so
be it.
I know of no rich librarians. But I also know of no rich Records
Managers and yet they manage to go to a convention each year that costs
$600 for registration. This includes no meals. We really do have it
good, thanks to the ever budget conscious Headquarters Staff and our
elected representatives on the Executive Board. I am even more of a
believer since I have been on the Board.
