AALL Membership Directory

The following is a response to the message (below) regarding the AALL
Directory posted on Law-lib on 4/9.

Let me assure you that there is no intent to charge members for the annual
Membership Directory. We all recognize that it is a highly valued membership
benefit. In fact we hope to continually improve it and make it more useful to
members and others.

The CCH Reference Point mention of the Directory on page 2 of the Spring 1996
issue was not as clear as it might have been. DUPLICATE or ADDITIONAL copies
of the Directory are available to members for $65. Copies are also available
to non-members for $100. Both of these practices have been the custom for
quite some time. In 1995 AALL sold approximately 80 copies.

Both the Salary Survey and the Price Index are now being sold in order to
accomplish the following two objectives consistent with the AALL Strategic
Plan:

1. To begin to develop more association publications that are valued by
members for the high quality of information provided and overall usefulness
to law librarians.

2. To generate sufficient income from these publications to cover their
costs and to invest in enhanced and additional publications.

Even with generous corporate support the 1995 Salary Survey required an
investment that was considerably higher than in the past. It would not have
been possible to allocate the necessary resources from dues income. Therefore
in order to produce a publication of high quality and usefulness it was
essential to be able to cover those costs through sales.

Income from sales of the 1995 Price Index will be used to support the
development and preparation of a substantially enhaced and - we hope - even
more useful 1996 Price Index to Legal Publications. Margie Axtmann, newly
appointed Editor of the 1996 Price Index welcomes your suggestions for
changes that you would like to see in the next edition.

You will be pleased to learn that we are now preparing AALL's first Annual
Report. It will be included in the June Newsletter. Watch for it.

Like last year the Association's audited financial report authored by
Treasurer Anne Grande will appear in the May Newsletter. Please feel free to
send her your comments and questions.

Where was I when the lights went out?

I just received the Librarian's Reference Point from CCH with a reference
to the AALL Membership Directory being available to MEMBERS for $65.

Excuse me?

I know AALL has working toward bringing in more money but enough is
enough. $60 for the salary survey and $20 for what was formerly Bettie
Scott's Price Index for Legal Publications? In one year members are
being asked to pay $145 for items we previously received as a benefit of
membership. That only leaves the monthly newsletter as "free" and how
long will that last? It's $50 to nonmembers -- will we be asked to pay
next year?

I remember the discussion about charging for Law Library Journal--when
were all these other charges discussed? Has being too darned poor to
attend the annual meeting meant I didn't get a chance to hear the
discussion or have I been totally derelict about reading my mail and the
AALL literature? I really don't remember seeing information about these
changes. And frankly I don't like them.

One document I would be willing to pay for is a very detailed, down
to the nitty-gritty, annual report from AALL. Does such a publication
exist?
