I'm sorry to learn that a few AALL members were offended by the five
proprietary questions among the thirty-eight questions on the AALL Survey. I
need to explain that CCH did not require that those questions appear on the
survey instrument. They were quite willing to provide substantial financial
and staff research expertise and assistance to AALL without a quid pro quo of
any kind. It would have been impossible for AALL to conduct a benchmark
survey of this scope and potential benefit without such help.
As a way of expressing the Association's appreciation for their help, I
proposed and the AALL Board agreed to offer them the opportunity to pose a
few questions of their own on the survey.
When the AALL Board discussed this opportunity they saw parallels between
asking the questions on the survey and the customary practice of publishers'
holding focus groups with AALL members to determine market needs. The
objective of both approaches is to produce better products and services that
will meet the needs of law libraries and law librarians.
We are very grateful for the high response rate from members to the Survey.
Results will be available for discussion in Indianapolis. Thanks to everyone
for their help.
