GPO ACCESS SERVER ADDRESS CHANGES!
Effective on April 15, 1996, all of the GPO Access Federal
Register databases and all historical databases (those with
information from 1994 or earlier) will be accessible ONLY through
separate dedicated WAIS servers.
If you are accessing the online databases via the World Wide Web,
dial-in, telnet, or a gateway you do not need to worry about
these changes. If you are using a WAIS client however, you will
need to make several adjustments.
Due to the high usage of the 1995 and 1996 Federal Register
databases, GPO has dedicated a server (frwais.access.gpo.gov) for
those databases, including the 1995 and 1996 Unified Agendas.
This will significantly reduce the search response time for all
of our databases (by approximately 50%).
At the same time, all historical databases (1994 and earlier)
have been relocated to the server at the GPO Access Storage
Facility in Owensboro, KY (gpoaccess.occ.uky.edu).
The address changes are as follows:
- 1995 and 1996 Federal Register and Unified Agenda
Databases:
Old Address: wais.access.gpo.gov
New Address: frwais.access.gpo.gov
- 1994 Federal Register and Unified Agenda, and Other
Historical Databases:
Old Address: wais.access.gpo.gov
New Address: gpoaccess.occ.uky.edu
In order to assist you with these changes, detailed instructions
are provided below. Please make these changes immediately so you
can continue to access these official government documents.
(After April 15th, the databases will NOT be accessible via the
old server address.)
Also effective on April 15, 1996, TIFF files will no longer be
available online for the 1995 Congressional Record and the 1995
Federal Register. Graphics are available through the Acrobat PDF
files. (NOTE: TIFF files will continue to be available for the
U.S. Code, 1994 Congressional Record and 1994 Federal Register
since there are no PDF files for those databases.)
WAIS CLIENT ACCESS
A. Editing a Source File For WinWAIS:
Execute the following steps to edit a source file for an existing
database:
1. Open the WinWAIS software;
2. Pull down the Edit menu and select the Select Sources menu
item;
3. Click on the database to be edited;
4. Click on View
5. Edit the information in the host field using the
information provided above;
6. Click the OK button in the Edit WAIS Source Definition Window;
7. Click on the OK button in the Selected WAIS Sources Window.
B. Editing a Source File For MacWAIS:
Execute the following steps to edit a source file for an existing
database:
1. Open the MacWAIS software;
2. Choose "edit" from the Sources pull down menu
3. Highlight the database to be modified
4. Change the database name as indicated below
5. Click the OK button.
