April 8, 1996 is now the final deadline for the mailing of
completed AALL Member Surveys. Please take twenty minutes to
complete the survey and mail it by the postmark deadline.
There is already an extraordinary 35% response rate, with 1684
surveys returned. The goal is to have all AALL members
participate in this survey. A response rate reflecting a
majority of AALL members will assist AALL leaders in making the
most educated decisions about many Association issues. Your
participation will be greatly appreciated!

AALL PRESS RELEASE
HEADLINE: AALL To Conduct First-Ever Demographic Survey
CONTACT: Roger H. Parent, Executive Director, 312/939-4764
January 12, 1996. In its first broad effort to gather reliable
information about members' needs and interests, The American
Association of Law Libraries (AALL) will conduct an
Association-wide demographic survey, mailing a survey instrument
to each of its members. The survey, generously supported by CCH
Incorporated, will gather information in more than 30 areas, such
as age, number of years in AALL, and education background of its
members.
In addition, AALL will also gather information about experiences
and opinions about some significant issues that affect law
librarians and need to be addressed in the near future. Topics
of investigation will include inquires about the nature of the
membership -- should it include other types of information
providers like publishers as full voting members; members'
support for expanded regional programming; experiences with the
Law Library Journal; the level of interest in Continuing Legal
Education credits and other forms of certification; the level of
support for lobbying efforts in Washington D.C.; efforts to
expand communication with members electronically through AALLNET;
factors determining attendance at the annual meeting; areas
ofinterest for future programs; current use of technology; and
other topical areas of special interest to our members today.
CCH Representatives Kathy Savage, Senior Marketing Research
Analyst, and Patricia Schiele, Editor, Librarian's Reference
Point, have designed the survey in collaboration with Ann Puckett
(Director and Professor of Law, University of Georgia Law
Library, Athens, Georgia), Chair of the AALL Strategic Planning
Committee, and Margie Axtmann (Assistant Director for
Collections and Technical Services, University of Minnesota Law
Library, Minneapolis, Minnesota), Past Chair of the Committee.
They received suggestions, questions and topics to investigate
from the Chairs of the LLJ Advisory Committee and the Education
Committee. They also examined the surveys of other associations,
and the results of the 1995 Pittsburgh focus groups; and the
reports of Task Forces such as Diversifying Educational
Offerings, and Exploring the Special Characteristics of Law
Librarians.
This new survey follows the Biennial Salary Survey 1995, issued
in January 1996, also in partnership with CCH. "Both surveys
will enable AALL to move further toward becoming a "knowledge-
based" association, making decisions about strategic and other
directions based on reliable information from a broad cross
section of its members, " said Roger H. Parent, AALL Executive
Director,"Together, these two surveys will provide members and
the Association with extraordinarily valuable information for
strategic planning and marketing to its membership. Results will
be widely disseminated at the Annual Meeting in Indianapolis and
in the Newsletter."
