I happened to have one of the products in my cd-rom drive when this
request came through, and did a search for businesses with "Main
Street" as part of the name of the business. There were thousands,
and numerous repetitions, so I don't recommend this as a way to find
the answer.
The name of the product is BusinessPhone Book, by ProCD, Inc. 222
Rosewood Drive, P.O. Box 2039, Danvers, MA 01923-5039,
http://www.procd.com, 1-508-750-0055. (The product works really well,
by the way, for its intended purpose.)

Here's an idea -- it'll take some work and expertise (you'll probably need
someone to help you). Buy one of the CD's that has the name and address of
every business in the country. They're less that $100, (the name escapes me
right now). Export it into a file for your favorite database manager.
Create an index key that is city+state+ "Y" if the street address contains "
MAIN ", and "N" otherwise. Count the number of unique entries where the
address contains " MAIN ".
Contact me directly and I can give you more complete instructions for doing
it in dBase. This is a straightforward problem for someone who is skilled
in database manipulation.
