After meeting with DOJ over the proposed merger, it seems as though there
are certain types of information which would be useful evidence for the
government, in determining the anticompetitive aspects of the merger.
1. Do West and Thomson engage in advertising which compares the two
companies products head to head? Examples of such advertising would be
very useful.
2. What has happended in the past when firms were acquired by other
legal publishers? For example, does anyone have the changes in prices
following the 1989 Thomson aquistion of Lawyers Coop? What has happened
after other Thomson acquisitons?
This is just a short note, and I'll post some additional information
in a day or so.
DOJ says that there should be a decision by the end of the week on
whether DOJ or the FTC will be doing the 30 day merger review.
