Indeed, I can vouch for the existence of USAID. It is a U.S. federal
government program for helping out developing countries (I think --
correct me if I'm wrong here, everybody). At any rate, it's legit; I've
seen USAID representatives with my own eyes!
And you're right that it is pronounced U-S-A-I-D and not "U.S. Aid".
