I have been involved in the testing of library software in a client
server WAN environment that was created for purposes of this test. We
set up an IP address in our office in Silicon Valley to act as client.
In our Boston office, we have attempted to install the client server
demo disk but have had problems related to network cards and packet
drivers. The exact environment is IPX, TCP/IP, windows NT server. We
previously did not have packet drivers installed but were prompted to
do so by the vendors suggestion and from error messages when the
installation failed.
I researched the problem both by literature and by calling technical
people. My understanding of the problem based on literature I found
is that, when you introduce new protocol (TCP/IP which is the protocol
the software vendor uses for its client server WAN product), you have
to install packet drivers. In other words, the coexistence of two
different protocols (IPX and TCP/IP) requires the installation of
separate packet drivers which are very hardware specific.
We have been having some difficulty getting past this problem. The
literature I read was dated 1991 and any more recent literature
discusses the best network cards and packet drivers on the market but
doesn't discuss whether the installation of packet drivers is still
always required. I wondered if there are any library software
packages out there that are so advanced, i.e., have a built in
solution so that the installation of separate packet drivers is no
longer required.
I'd appreciate any insight into this problem that anyone can give me.
Thanks.
