With great sadness, the staff of Northwestern University Law Library
wish to inform the law library community that Barbara J. Hycnar,
Associate Director/Head of Technical Services, died on January 3,
1996.
Since August 1980, Barbara had been responsible for the entire
technical services operation at the Law Library. She supervised the
physical transition to a new building, and the bibliographic
transition from a card catalog to an automated system. She was
responsible for bringing the library into conformity with national
and international standards for bibliographic organization.
Barbara was active in professional library associations on both the
local and national level, including the American Library Association,
the American Association of Law Libraries, and the Chicago
Association of Law Libraries.
Barbara held a bachelor's degree with honors from the University of
Wisconsin and a master's degree in library science from the
University of Michigan. Before coming to Northwestern, she was with
the University Library at the University of Illinois at Chicago.
Those of us who worked with her at Northwestern University Law
Library will miss her, not only as a respected colleague, but also
as a good friend.
