Judy:
A quick search of Nexis archives found the following:

"Let me live in my house by the side of the road
And be a friend to man...."

Sam Walter Foss, 19th century New Hampshire poet. The article was in the
New York Times, 3/28/93, about buffering older houses that are RIGHT by
the side of the road from the noise. It notes that when the poet wrote
those words, that said a lot about the character of the speaker, that he
loved people. But, it said, with the advent of automobiles, there is
much more noise on the side of the road, and houses right on the side of
the road are no longer fashionable. Hope this helps.
