Academic library colleagues:
I wonder whether others are sharing our experience that law students
are increasingly bringing their small children (infants, toddlers,
and pre-schoolers) to school with them. At Missouri, this has become
quite an issue this year. On the one hand, law student-parents are
asking for space in the library where they can study or do research
and supervise their children at the same time. We have limited group
study rooms available, but are trying to find a suitable space.
On the other hand, many of our other students are complaining about
the noise and disruption the children cause. For example, crying can
be heard in open study areas even if the student-parents and their
children are in a study room with the door closed. We are trying to
find a way to accommodate the needs of both groups.
If anyone has faced this issue, please let me know how you resolved
it and what kind of facilities, if any, you made available to the
student-parents, and with what restrictions on their use.
Please reply to me, and I will summarize the replies for the list.
Thanks.
