On October 30, 1995, the South Dakota Supreme Court issued an order
adopting a new rule relating to citation to the official opinions of
the Court. The rule provides that for all published opinions of the
Court released on or after January 1, 1996, citation shall be by
calendar year in which the decision was announced, the Court
designation "SD", and a sequential number assigned by the Clerk of
the Supreme Court. Citations to specific portions of the opinion
shall be by pararaph number assinged by the Clerk of the Supreme
Court. This is essentially the model endorsed by the AALL as
recommended by the Task Force on Citations, the so called
"Wisconsin" model. The new rule also provides for parallel citation to
the Northwestern Reporter.
