Head of Reference Services, Boston University Pappas Law Library
Responsibilities: The Head of Reference Services has primary
responsibility for developing and managing reference services and
programs and for supervising and directing the reference staff in
providing excellent reference services and research instruction. The
position supervises four full-time staff consisting of three professional
reference/senior reference librarians and one reference services
assistant/interlibrary loan supervisor as well as several student
assistants. The position reports to the Associate Director and works with
all library administrators to plan and achieve goals and objectives for
the reference department. The Head of Reference Services schedules and
participates in reference desk staffing and provides daily reference
assistance to students, faculty and alumni. Reference librarians
regularly give research lectures, teach online training classes, provide
orientations and instructional tours of the library, and develop research
guides. Each reference librarian participates in collection development
and is responsible for developing research knowledge in a substantive
area of law to support law school concentrations in international law,
health law, intellectual property law, banking law and tax law.
Schedule: During the academic year, all librarians work one evening per
week and rotate weekend hours. The library is closed evenings and
weekends during the summer.
Requirements: JD and MLS from accredited programs. A minimum of three
years of relevant law library experience required. Candidates must have
excellent knowledge of legal research resources and methodology,
including traditional and online services. A demonstrated interest in
teaching, developing new research programs, a strong service orientation
and organizational skills are essential. The successful candidate should
exhibit exceptional interpersonal and leadership skills, and should be
enthusiastic about working as an effective team member.
