Hello again everyone. Apparently this subject is one that interests a
lot of people. Sabrina Pacifici, editor of PLL Perspectives, has asked
that I write up the information I have gathered from this survey into an
article for the newsletter so that it gets a wider audience. I agreed,
but I think that to do it right, it would be nice to ask a few more
questions and get a few more responses. Again, please respond to me
directly to ensure confidentiality.
Questions already asked:
1. What is your billable rate?
2. How many attorneys are in your firm?
3. What education/experience do you have?
4. How large is the library staff?
5. How does your rate compare to others who bill time in your firm?
6. In what city/state/region is your firm located?
Additional questions:
7. How many hours do you bill per day/week/month/year?
8. Do you have a quota you must meet?
9. Is your compensation related to the number of hours you bill?
10. Is there a range of billable rates depending on project
size/complexity/urgency?
11. If your rate has ever been raised, what were the factors going into
that decision?
12. How is your time identified on the client bill? (e.g. Librarian,
Research, your name, etc.)
Any other comments you care to make would be extremely helpful.
As for myself, I will be taking this information to my next Library
Committee meeting which will be in early December. I think it will be
quite an eye-opener for many members of the Committee!
Thanks so much for all your help. I hope that more people will be able
to use the results of the survey to assure themselves of more recognition
and respect. We all need a little personal P.R. now and then!
