> What? Not even, maybe, a little french twist for dress-up days?
My nieces did me up in a french braid last summer. It's interesting
to reflect on how utterly unthinkable it would be for a man to show
up to work that way. I sometimes wish it were socially acceptable
for males to do anything with their long hair besides pull it
straight back. After all, there are practical reasons for wearing a
bun -- it gives you a neat place to keep your pencil! I thought the
60's took care of all that, anyway! (Along with legalized pot, free
love, and the abolition of money.)
(Spare change, anyone?)
We often belittle "style" as the opposite of "substance," but my
anthropologist friend says that in fact it is the very stuff of
which culture is made. (When she begins to elaborate it gets real
technical, real fast, so I won't even try to explain what it's
supposed to mean. But it sounds impressive at a dinner party, as
long as you can just say it and move on to the next topic of
conversation before anyone tries to discuss it seriously!)
Have a good weekend!
