Shortly before the AALL Annual Meeting, I learned that the FDA had suspended
distribution of a prescription item that I needed but that the product was
available over-the-counter in Canada. I broadcast an appeal to this list for
a Canadian colleague to help, and within hours a good samaritan had offered
her shopping and schlepping services. We met for the first time at the
Opening Reception and completed the transaction.
I want to publicly thank Anne Matthewman for her help, and in a larger sense
to thank all of you for being such great colleagues. This was a special
favor since it was in no way job-related and required personal effort
afterhours, but this list is constantly filled with examples of colleagues
expending considerable effort to research reference questions or give advice
to colleagues.
When the heat of passionate discussion on controversial issues leads some of
us to start viewing the law library world through an "us vs. them" lens (mea
culpa), it's good to remember this foundation of professional cooperation and
personal sacrifice. That's what attracted me to the profession in the first
place, and it is important to reaffirm that it is still the customary mode of
interaction among us.
So thanks again, Anne--both for the medicine and for a refreshing reminder of
what makes law librarianship such a great place to be.
