Many good points have been made by all sides in this discussion. But as
far as "who should be allowed on this list": a few years ago we had some
discussion about who should be allowed to join our local law librarians'
group. We had a mixed bag of attendees--full and part-timers, with and
without a library science degree, some people who worked both the library
and the reception desk, visitors of various kinds, etc. Finally, one
insightful member observed that no one in their right minds would WANT to
attend our meetings unless they really needed to and were interested.
Anyone who needed us and was interested should be welcomed, and if they
needed more help than we could give them we would let them know and steer
them in a better direction. This policy has worked fine ever since.
Perhaps we could apply it to law-lib, also, at least for now...
