Providing legal reference service to the public is certainly an important
value for law librarians, but the question is whether the law-lib list is
the appropriate place for it. I already hear from lots of law librarians
thate there is too much noise on this list as it is; if reference
questions from non-librarians start making their way to this list, I fear
that a lot of law librarians would unsubscribe. I barely have time to
handle the reference questions I receive from my own faculty and
students, much less providing reference service to the world.
For those who wish to participate in this sort of service, I recommend
volunteering with The Internet Public Library
<http://ipl.sils.umich.edu/>. This is a service that I've mentioned
here before, run by faculty and students at the University of Michigan
School of Information and Library Studies. In addition to providing
well-organized links to reference sources on the Internet, the IPL offers
an experimental service, answering reference questions for the public.
They are looking for volunteer reference librarians to participate. For
more information, see <http://ipl.sils.umich.edu/ref/STAFF/Recruit.html>
