Criminal Defenses

I have a professor who is seeking help in finding criminal defenses which
are not primarily geared to rebutting the accusations, but which argue
implicitly for justification with a coded message that will hopefully be
understood by a sympathetic judge or jury but not remote authority.
For example, a patriot under a tyranny or foreign domination might not
deny (or even admit) to accusations, not plead justification, but claim
disingenuously to have acted on behalf of the authorities whose officers have
misunderstood what was wanted. The professor has a general interest in
coded messages (for example, fables in which animals talk in parables).
Examples from any time and place would be welcome. Feel free to respond to
me directly.
