Look at it this way. If Chicago Lawyer had printed the article that
appeared in the AALL newsletter, as it's "cover story" with no other
point of view expressed to balance it, we'd all be writing nasty
letters to the editor! :-) And no, I don't think a black cover
and a letter from Lorraine Kulpa in the previous issue qualifies.
I don't think anyone is suggesting that the article should be
"censored". We certainly need to hear both sides of the issue, and I
appreciate Donna Heroy's effort to provide us with information on
this topic. While outsourcing the entire library staff seems absurd to
most of us, there are very few of us who haven't used outsourcing to some
extent, even if just for looseleaf filing.
By the way, I just read the article that appeared in Chicago
Lawyer, (July 1995) and I want to compliment the librarians
that took part in the panel discussion that formed the basis
of the article. They were all calm, articulate, logical, and
just all around impressive. The profession was very well
represented by these librarians - Patricia Patterson, Karin
Donahue, Susan Siebers, Louis Covostsos, Sandra Gold and
William Scarbrough. You guys were great! We couldn't have
asked for better PR than that.
