This message is in response to those who have expressed concern about the
lead article by Donna
Tuke Heroy in the June 1995 Newsletter. I hope that you will seriously
consider writing a letter to the
Newsletter Editor for publication in a forthcoming issue. He would welcome
your thoughts on the Heroy
article, its placement on the cover of the June issue, and on the issue of
outsourcing.

You are right when you say this is a critical issue for firm librarians and
that AALL must take seriously
such a matter that affects so many of our members who work in firm libraries.
I can assure you that we
do understand the significance of this issue. In fact the editorial
decisions in both the May 1995 and
June 1995 issues are our way of expressing our awareness and concern about
this. We are trying to
provide a vehicle for members to communicate with each other on this matter.
We are trying to be sure
that the different perspectives are fully represented on the pages of the
Newsletter. It will be no surprise
to you that some members view the Baker & McKenzie law library outsourcing as
an isolated event,
whereas others view it as a life and death issue for all firm libraries. The
placement of this issue on the
covers of both the May 1995 and June 1995 issues is warranted by the current
level of concern among
our members. It would have been inadvisable, I think, for us to give
prominence to only certain views in

the Newsletter. We are attempting to be fair and unbiased in allowing members
the chance to speak out
in the Newsletter.

It has been my hope that the AALL Newsletter Editor would be aggressive in
soliciting pieces and
covering the different views of the members. I have encouraged him to
solicit articles, to identify topics
of concern to the members, and to encourage members to write for the
Newsletter. I believe that he has
done that. I hope that you and others will continue to read the Newsletter
and contribute to it. The Newsletter is
your Association publication and it will be shaped by your ideas and
suggestions.
