Re: AALL Newsletter - OUTSOURCING

I must disagree with Charlie Knuth's statement that AALL and
specifically the AALL Newsletter should start to censor articles and
speech for the "betterment" of law librarians. I read the
outsourcing article in the June 1995 issue (but somehow missed the
ensuing discussion between Suzanne Zumbro and Mark Estes) and I felt
it was thought provoking. I figured we would hear the other side of
the argument (if we hadn't already in the previous issue) in the near
future.

But just because the outsourcing article was published doesn't mean I
am going to 1. fall all over myself believing this is the way of the
future and 2. believe that AALL has come out in total support of
outsourcing. PLEASE give law librarians some credit and figure we
can disseminate and assimilate information from both sides of an
issue and come to our own conclusions. I don't need a censor to make
up my mind for me. And if we need a censor to protect ourselves from
the real world then we should begin to worry.

The day that AALL and the newsletter (or any other organization
supported publication) stops bringing the news, information and ideas
(whether they are for or against law librarians) is the day that
censorship rules and I turn in my membership.
