As the consulting historian and archivist for Cadwalader, Wickersham &
Taft, New York's oldest law firm (fd.1792) and the second oldest in the
nation, I am looking for information about collections of legal papers in
libraries and archives. By legal papers, I mean the personal or
professional papers of individual lawyers which may or may not include
client materials; the records of legal firms or legal organizations (docket
books, suit registers, charge records, client files, etc.); and collections
of client files.
If you have such materials, what are the access policies? How are questions
of privilege handled? Do you have sample donor agreements? If you can send
me a brief note summarizing what you have (or the name of the collection if
it is in RLIN) and how researchers can use it, I will get back in touch on
an individual basis either by phone or e-mail. This information will help
me formulate proposals for the disposition of the very rich collection of
materials we have at CWT, dating from the late 18th century to c.1945. TIA.
