On behalf of the Mersky Spirit of Law Librarianship Award Committee, I
am pleased to announce this year’s award winners. Thank you very much
to everyone that submitted a nomination.
This year the Committee has decided to recognize two law librarians
that exemplify the ideals of the Mersky Spirit of Law Librarianship
Award for Public Service.
Terrye Conroy, Reference/Public Services Librarian at the Coleman
Karesh Law Library University of South Carolina School of Law, is
being honored for her work developing, in coordination with the South
Carolina Library Association, the Circuit Riders program which travels
throughout the state teaching basic legal research skills to non-law
librarians in public and academic libraries.
Leslie Corey Leach, Librarian at Skadden, Arps, Slate, Meagher & Flom,
is being recognized for her work coordinating the GPLLA’s Delaware
SIS’s National Library Week book drive for the benefit of YWCA’s Home-
Life Management Center.
Congratulations to this year’s winners. They will split a modest cash
donation to their respective projects. The award will be presented on
Saturday evening at the Tarlton Law Library Alumni & Friends reception
during this year’s AALL Annual Meeting.
The award is made possible through the generosity of the Roy M Mersky
Spirit of Law Librarianship Foundation, which was created in order to
promote charitable work by law librarians and carry on the tradition
of the Spirit of Law Librarianship Award. The award was created some
twenty years ago by Professor Roy M. Mersky and Professor Richard
Leiter in conjunction with the The Fred B. Rothman & Company,
publisher of the first edition of their book, The Spirit of Law
Librarianship. A second edition of the book was published by Alert
Publications, Inc. Over the years, the award has been presented to
librarians from every section of our profession and has been engaged
in nearly every type of charitable work imaginable, from reading the
Blue Book on tape, to building law school libraries in Iraq. A list of
past award winners can be found at http://theleiters.net/MSLLAPS.
Last year, with the passing of Prof. Mersky, the award was renamed in
his honor and a foundation was established in order to ensure it’s
perpetuation. If you are interested in supporting charitable work by
law librarians in their communities and around the world, please
consider supporting the Foundation. For information about giving to
the Foundation, please contact Richard Leiter, rleiter@unl.edu, or
Terry Martin, TMartin@law.utexas.edu.
