NB: I sent this note to David yesterday in reply to an email
from him about finding the 1870 U.S. census...Linda Bee
Hi David,
Larger libraries should have 'Ancestry for Libraries' which users
can access for free. You wouldn't have to be a member of the
library but you would have to be there in person. For those
who have a library card to those libraries who offer at home
access to their services, Ancestry should be accessible.
HeritageQuest should also be available in larger libraries.
Ancestry.com has the entire U.S. census from 1790 through
1930 online. The 1930 census is difficult to search but the
others have good searching capabilities. Ancestry is also very
expensive. I just started a free trial (and yes, I'll join) so if you
need any lookups, let me know and I'll do them.
You can also go to Family Search and search the 1870
census for free.
U.S. Federal 1870 Census Database -- Family History Search
http://www.familyhistory.com/censusyear.asp?y=1870
Many public libraries carry their counties 1870 schedules on
their websites. You can also try USGenWeb's Census
Project:
Census Project (USGenWeb) - 1870 Census Help
http://www.usgwcensus.org/help/1870.htm
Also try these websites:
Census Online
http://www.census-online.com/
Census Finder - Free Census Records Online
http://www.censusfinder.com/
CensusDiggins - FREE Census Records, Marriage Records and Civil War
Databases
http://www.censusdiggins.com/
AccessGenealogy - Census Online
http://www.accessgenealogy.com/census/
When searching a census it helps to know the state, the
county and then the city/town along with the name.
Hope this helps.

NB: I sent this to David earlier this morning. Since there
are a lot of links included, I thought I'd send this one to the
list also...Linda Bee
Hi David,
More about census records. If Temple does not have the
various 'genealogy' programs, they should have them.
The below is from World Vital Records. It is a subscription
website but when they post a new database, it is free for
ten days. I've included a partial listing of their new databases.
Not only do the specialized websites labeled 'genealogy'
have family genealogies and vital records, they usually have
biographies, history and a lot of social science along with
some medical information. I've learned so much browsing
through these sites.
One that will stick with me is the small town that diarrhea
almost wiped out. One day a mother would die, the next
day two of her children would die; then another child and
yet another...then the father would die...all within a week
and all from diarrhea. Every family in this town was
affected. The infection lasted from late spring until the
fall. All this was in the town's vital records. It was written
matter of factly and with no emotion. I can't imagine what
the person writing these pages felt. Even worse is to think
that this would be preventable today.
You can find quite a bit about yellow fever epidemics along
with diptheria, polio epidemics and Civil War medicine. You
can learn archaic names and occupations. (I have a X-great-
grandfather whose given name was Septerious. There were a
lot of those types of names in his generation.)
Google Books is a wonderful free resource for family and local
histories. So is American Memory and Making of America
(both websites). Footnote (a subscription website) is another
wonderful resource. All the links are below along along with a
copy of one of the emails I sent to the Candyman Genealogy
list with a list of book collection links.
Hope this helps someone.
Linda

The Reconstructed 1790 Census of Georgia.
(available 6/23/2009). Free for Ten Days.
Marie De Lamar and the other compilers of this work
extracted data found in wills, deeds, tax digests, court
minutes, voters' lists, newspapers, and other contemporary
records--records roughly contemporaneous with the 1790
census--identifing about 15,000 Georgians who were living
at the time of the 1790 census, thus creating a "reconstructed"
census from substitute records.
Counties covered include all of those formed before 1790,
Burke, Camden, Chatham, Effingham, Franklin, Glynn,
Greene, Liberty, Richmond, Washington, and Wilkes. Also
covered are Columbia and Elbert counties, which were formed
just after the census was taken. Information in the text is purposely
sparse, the compilers' object being simply to identify individuals
in at least one record of a county at a particular time.
