I’d like to thank everyone (too numerous to list individually) for the
advice and help regarding the terms. It seems that “prospective” and “ex
post facto” are the terms my sister was looking for.

Special thanks to Ed Edmonds for info on the case Toolson v. New York
    Yankees, Inc.
    346 U.S. 356 (1953)

I also loved Holly Lakatos’ answer:
I don’t think that there is such a term. Ex post facto is the term that is
used to describe “retroactive laws”. In the US, such laws are generally
banned by the constitution (article I, sec. 9). Since it’s for a fictional
piece, though, perhaps the author could coin a new phrase!

Thanks to Ruth Alcabes for the definition of Prospective from Findlaw

Susan, check out these terms to see which ones work best.

    And thanks again to everyone.

Hi everyone. This is posted on behalf of Susan Rubinstein.

We are looking for the legal term that describes the concept of a law or
case decision not being retroactive. In other words, a decision handed down
in the 24th century would not apply in the 21st century. Kind of the reverse
of stare decisis (not sure of the spelling of this and don’t feel like
    getting the dictionary).

If you know what this is off the top of your head, please e-mail me. Don’t
go to a lot of trouble; this is for a fictional writing project on
    fanfiction.net
If anyone is really interested, I’ll post the details. The stories are
    hysterical!
