    */Trends and events impact our lives on a daily basis - this workshop
    will start off with a look at what's coming our way.../**/
    /*

    */Keynote: New Horizons for the Middle Manager: An Environmental Scan/*
    *Rick J. Block, *Head, Special Collections Metadata and Cataloging,
    Columbia University

    Environmental scanning has a broad meaning and refers to investigating
    salient economic, social, political, and technological trends and
    events, identifying potential opportunities or threats implied by those
    trends and events, and analyzing library operations, resources and
    services in light of those trends and events. A good environmental scan
    engages us in "future-thinking" and is used to generate actionable
    dialog about organizational changes necessary to address those trends
    and events. A scan is also used to stimulate conversations and challenge
    the status quo. Rick will look at trends and events that will affect the
    future of technical services, and the impact those trends will have on
    middle managers.
