EVENING REFERENCE LIBRARIAN
The Judge Kathryn J. DuFour Law Library is seeking candidates for the
position of Evening Reference Librarian. The Evening Reference
Librarian reports directly to the Associate Director and Head of Public
Services, and, together with the Reference staff, provides reference and
research services to a law school community of 60 full-time faculty and
900 day and evening law students. The regularly scheduled hours for
this position are Sunday - Thursday, Noon - 8 p.m.
Specifically, the Evening Reference Librarian:
1. Provides direct reference assistance to all Law School library
patrons seeking information in person, by telephone or chat service.
2. Assists and instructs faculty and students in effective legal
research techniques and sources through hands-on training and advanced
instruction, individually, in small groups, and in classroom settings,
including participation in the first-year Legal Skills Program.
3. Provides substantial research assistance to the law school
faculty, including preparation of bibliographies, monitoring current
awareness, searching legal and non-legal databases, and performing
in-depth subject area research.
4. Participates in the supervision of part-time Circulation desk
staff and the contract security officer employed by the library.
5. Participates actively with the library staff on library goal
planning, collection development, and library policy.
6. Prepares library guides, bibliographies and web guides for
general research use.
7. Assists in the operation and troubleshooting of the computer lab
and library component of the law school network. Provides direct
assistance to faculty and students on the use of a variety of computer
software applications.
EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE: Juris Doctor (J.D.) or equivalent degree from an
accredited law school and a Master's of Library Science (M.L.S.). Two
years experience as a professional librarian, preferably in the
reference department of a law library. Substantial experience in a legal
environment (four or more years in a law library) may substitute for the
J.D. degree. Evidence of significant participation in professional
activities, such as law librarian associations, publications, etc., is
essential. A strong service orientation, with the ability to exercise
tact and good judgment and to maintain a warm and approachable manner in
the midst of a busy workflow is a must.
