Dear colleagues,
I sent this email out over the holidays, so I apologize to those who have
seen this but in the event that anyone else has some good recommendations,
I thought I would try again.
I was hoping perhaps someone on the list might be able to help us identify
a good resource for data on medical malpractice lawsuits here in the U.S.
We are trying to undertake a study of orthopedic surgical cases to
identify the incidence of lawsuits filed against surgeons that mention
either excessive bleeding or blood clotting in patients. We have some
resources in-house including Lexis data sources that report on select
cases but we are hoping there might be something more comprehensive out
there. We've also contacted a local insurance library for their
suggestions, are waiting for more information from Jury Verdict Research
and also came across National Practitioner Data Bank (NPDB) to see if
their data might be helpful.
Would you happen to have any recommendations of sources we might explore
in addition to those mentioned above? I'm hoping someone on the list has
had to identify data on specific types of medical malpractice suits in the
past and might know of a good database or data source.
Also, if you know of any good sources that report summary statistics
(i.e., the total number of medical malpractice lawsuits filed annually in
the US, average settlements or damages awards by type of allegation,
etc.), that would be helpful as well.
Best regards,
Victoria
