Our existing building will be undergoing renovation in January and there will be no available study space in our building. From 1985 to present, the library was available to the law students 24 hours/7 days a week and the circulation desk was staffed until 10:00 p.m./7 days a week. The library has been asked to hire two students to work until Midnight /7 days to assist, if needed, with retrieving material from a remote stack area in the basement, to monitor the use of the study areas in the new building, and to secure the study areas and remind people that the area will be closed at midnight.
I would like to hear from those libraries that have experience with this type of situation or just having a student work the late shift specifically, the closing procedures. Are they expected to ask people to leave and if they don't leave do they call security? Or what other actions are taken to get people to comply with the closing policy. It has been my experience, students have a problem asking another student to leave a conference room that they have signed out so asking them to leave at midnight might also present a problem. What other problems or difficulties am I not seeing with this situation? Ideally, it would be better to hire someone who is not a student (or at least not a law student) Your input would be much appreciated. Thank you.
