Hello Law-Lib Members,
I am forwarding this request from D'Arcy Kemnitz, the Executive
Director of the National Lesbian and Gay Law Association. She is seeking a
volunteer to help her place a series of bar association studies on the web in
an easily searchable online format. This would make a nice project for a
library science student, or for any librarian interested in lesbian and gay
legal issues. Please see the complete message below, including contact
information for D'Arcy Kemnitz, in case you are interested in assisting.
Thank you,
James Durham, Chair
Standing Committee on Lesbian and Gay Issues of SR-SIS (AALL)

The National Lesbian and Gay Law Association is an association of lawyers,
judges, law students, activists, and affiliated lesbian, gay, bisexual,
transgender (LGBT) legal organizations. Currently, the Association is a
federation of almost two dozen regional, state and local LGBT voluntary bar
associations, and over 133 LGBT law student groups at ABA-approved law
schools around the nation. Both the National Lesbian and Gay Law
Association, and its sister organization the National Lesbian and Gay Law
Foundation, aspire to improve the quality of life for LGBT legal
practitioners until the time that LGBT legal professionals are recognized
without discrimination, stigma or negative bias. NLGLA builds bridges and
affirms the lives of "out" LGBT professionals, especially through its annual
legal career fair and conference.
In 1992, NLGLA became an official affiliated organization of the American Bar
Association (ABA). In February of this year, the ABA passed a recommendation
supported by NLGLA and others, to amend the ABA's Goal IX to include lesbian,
gay, bisexual, and transgender people. When originally adopted in 1991, Goal
IX was "to promote full and equal participation in the legal profession by
minorities and women." The recommendation to include LGBT legal professionals
was passed without any opposition.
NLGLA is seeking the right person to help bring together an online library of
bar association studies on bias in the profession and the LGBT community.
Currently there are 13 known studies conducted by bar associations since the
1990s that range in jurisdictions from the King County Bar Association to the
DC Bar. Few if any of these are online and accessible to interested parties.
For instance, Minnesota just conducted a survey at the end of 2007, finding
once again that bias exists in the profession against sexual orientation
minorities and those who do not gender conform. I believe it would be a real
service to the legal profession to have all of these surveys available to the
community in an easily searchable online format.
