Somebody on the Law-Lib discussion group gave a very brief note that leads
to a very long walk down the memory lane of internet resources this
weekend by simply posting this cryptic link that has so much buried under
the link from Net-Happenings Internet Scout Report days.
<http://scout.wisc.edu/Projects/PastProjects/NH/>
Since the entire archives of LawLib-L is coming up with page not found
error messages at this time, I cannot provide a link for this post,
hopefully this valuable archives is just down at this time and not lost.
Here then is my expanded post regarding the classic resource list
Net-Happenings, that is actually still in existence through the auspices
of the Educational Cyberplayground, also detailed below.

Net-Happenings Goes Bye-Bye
ResearchBuzz!
<http://www.researchbuzz.org/2002/10/nethappenings_goes_byebye.shtml>
Gleason Sackmann has announced that Net-Happenings list, hosted by
Classroom Connect., is shutting down. Gleason says, "Since I am no longer
employed by Classroom Connect, I am shutting down this list... I have
enjoyed the years that the list has been running, and hope I can pick it
up at a later date." He will send out a note if the list starts up again.

[The Net-Happenings list did continue as tracable with the links above as
a service of the Educational Cyberplayground, where it is a current
active list administered by Karen Ellis. Prior to the Classroom Connect
period, Net-Happenings was a service of the Internet Scout Report.]

Greetings All,
Our friend Gleason Sackmann and his wife Jan have both decided to retire
from a lifetime of teaching in the K - 12 space. We would all like to get
up out of our chairs right now and give them a standing ovation. We wish
them well and hope they have a wonderful time traveling the US.

NEWS: Gleason Sackmann Retires from Net-Happenings Discussion Group
<http://groups.yahoo.com/group/mediamentor/message/15811>
Net-Happenings over time has been one of the important lists found in
groups of lists of value on Internet Lists of Lists like this one.
Mailing Lists for Journalists and Broadcasters
<http://www.synapse.net/radio/listserv.htm>
Quoting
"Mailing lists are often the best way to find useful information on the
net. Because you have to take the trouble to subscribe to them, they are a
little more work than just selecting and browsing a newsgroup. And because
they require a bit of effort, and because they are sometimes moderated,
the casual commentator with an off-topic comment is less likely to be
heard."
<snip>
Some General Interest Mailing Lists
Edupage - a thrice-weekly summary of news items on information technology.
To subscribe to Edupage: send a message to: listproc@educom.edu, with the
subject blank and in the body of the message type: subscribe edupage
Jackie Robinson (assuming that your name is Jackie Robinson; if it isn't,
substitute your own name). ... To cancel, send a message to:
listproc@educom.edu and in the body of the message type: unsubscribe
edupage. Edupage is also available via the WWW. For the French edition of
Edupage, contact proulxj@ERE.UMontreal.CA.
net-happenings - a list of new sources and sites on the Internet. To
subscribe to net-happenings, send a message to
majordomo@lists.internic.net with the subject blank and "subscribe
net-happenings" in the message body.
Both Edupage and net-happenings are archived:
http://educom.edu/edupage.old for Edupage
http://www.gi.net/NET for net-happenings.
[The list of journalism related discussion groups is also quite
interesting on this web page.]

If readers go digging in older parts of these treasure troves, dead links
in old messages are bound to occur, so permit me here to quote from my
Temple University Library Guide for "General Internet & Print Resources"
How to Update Dead Links in Any Guide Yourself
.
There are two methods that I most recommend for "updating" dead links in
any list of websites. These are techniques that can be especially useful
when one finds a resource they simply must see, only to find the website
is gone when the hyperlink is clicked.
First try the website URL in the Internet Archive.
Secondly search the name of the website enclosed in quotation marks in:
Google
http://www.google.com
Google News
http://www.google.com/nwshp?hl=en&tab=wn&q=
Google Scholar
http://scholar.google.com/schhp?hl=en&q=&tab=ns
Google Government
http://www.google.com/ig/usgov
The result of these searches may be finding the old site at a new location
or finding other relevant content that you can use in place of the
deceased website.

Google Scholar provides a simple way to broadly search for
scholarly literature. From one place, you can search across
many disciplines and sources: peer-reviewed papers, theses,
books, abstracts and articles, from academic publishers,
professional societies, preprint repositories, universities and
other scholarly organizations. Google Scholar helps you identify
the most relevant research across the world of scholarly research.

Google News is an automated news aggregator provided
by Google Inc. The initial idea, StoryRank-related to
Google's PageRank formula-was developed by
Krishna Bharat in 2001, the Principal Research Scientist
of Google. No human is involved in the altering of the
front page or story promotion, beyond tweaking the
aggregation algorithm.
