Hi Amy,
I think that this could be quite a challenge and I'm a seasoned business
searcher. I can't see how this could be tracked easily.
Here are some thoughts:
1. See if you can brainstorm key terms with the prof for generating
articles in business, news and trade literature.
Using the words parent and subsidiary is probably not going to work Chances
are the word parent won't be used often if at all. An article may say
something like company name has decided to shut down or close subsidiary or
who knows what other terms?
Can the prof. provide examples? Then you can search the literature to see
what's written about known companies as a way to identify additional key
terms.
2. Ask the professor who else would want to know with a goal of trying to
figure out whether it's more likely than not that an information provider
would track this information. If lots of folks are interested in knowing
this, then someone may be tracking it but at the moment I'm feeling
doubtful.
3. You could search for surveys or studies. Would someone at a business
school want to know this and is conducting research on this subject? Is
there a company that could profit by conducting a study and selling it?
Fundamentally, you'll need to see if you develop a list of key terms and
concepts to search on and the best way I can think of is to look at known
examples to generate additional search terms.

Subject: [LAW-LIB:56141] parent/subsidiary information
Hi, Everyone,
I am not very fluent in searching for business information, and I'd
appreciate your wisdom. How would I go about searching for information on
parent companies who have refused to bail out their subsidiaries? My prof
wants a complete list for the past 5 years.
Thanks so much,
Amy Taylor
