Hi,
Your assumption that there is useful work-related content and
applications for these Web 2.0 tools (social networking sites)is
correct. They are especially useful for investigative research. Many
lawyers have used those sites to "make or break" a case.
I'll be speaking on this topic for 1.5 hours at the ABA annual meeting
in NY this August, and I include this topic in all of my in-person CLE
presentations.
As to obstacles in accessing these sites, when I did hands-on law firm
seminars last year (for 28 firms), I had to request, in advance, that
the IT departments give us access to these social networking sites
because most of the firms had blocked access to those sites. They assume
that all use of those sites is for personal use and takes away from
employees' productivity.

Hi all - I'm curious as to technical, institutional, personal, and other
barriers to using Facebook, Second Life, or other Web 2.0 technologies in your work places, including institutional blocks of access to them. I'm
starting with the assumption that there is useful work-related content and applications for these Web 2.0 tools. So, what are the obstacles to accessing that content? Any feedback welcome! Thanks, Lyo.
