The State of Oregon Law Library has an opening for a Reference Librarian.
We will review applications as received, but we do not expect to fill the
position until after the AALL Annual Meeting in Portland, July 12--15,
2008. We will be happy to meet with qualified applicants in Portland
through the Placement Office at the Annual Meeting.
THE POSITION: The Reference Librarian will staff the reference/circulation
desk with support from other library staff, and will provide professional
reference service to a diverse library clientele, including judges and
court staff, state agency lawyers and staff, members of the Bar, and the
public, using appropriate print and electronic services to respond to
requests in person, by telephone, by e-mail and by snail mail. The
Reference Librarian will assist library users in research applications of
information technologies and online services, and will coordinate with the
Electronic Services Librarian in developing training programs and
materials, in managing and updating library reference web pages, and in
editing the library's digital collection to comply with state law and court
rules. The Reference Librarian will also participate in collection
development and in monitoring emerging technologies to plan the future of
the library, recommending and developing new programs and services.
TO QUALIFY: You must have an MLS or MLIS degree from an ALA-accredited
institution and two years reference experience in a law library, including
significant involvement with traditional research tools, online legal
research, web research, and internet and intranet site editing.
Informally, part of the job is being the public face of the library, and we
are looking for a person with good technical skills, but who also is
outgoing and enthusiastic, able to promote the library and its services,
and to communicate easily with all kinds of people.
THE LIBRARY: Formerly the Oregon Supreme Court Library, we occupy the
entire second floor of the beautiful 1914 Supreme Court Building. Our
space was renovated in 2002, preserving the charm of the historical
building, but wired for current technology (See "They Said it Couldn't be
Done...," AALL Spectrum, May 2002, p. 12 ff.). The staff is a small but
highly collegial group, and we also maintain collegial relationships with
librarians at Willamette University and its law school, right across the
street, with State Library staff, two blocks away, and with county law
librarians throughout the state. The print collection comprises about
100.000 volumes, including a distinguished collection of 19th century
treatises and Oregon historical material. Our OPAC is Innovative's
Millennium, which we share with other members of the Hatfield Library
Consortium.
THE COMMUNITY: The library is located in Salem, Oregon's capital, a quiet,
pleasant city of about 100,000, only an hour from the Cascade Mountains to
the east, and an hour from the famed Oregon coast to the west, and less
than an hour via I-5 from the urban attractions of Portland, one of the
most livable cities of its size in the nation.
SALARY AND BENEFITS: $3758--5829 Monthly. Management benefit package
includes generous retirement plan, family health and dental insurance, term
life insurance. Paid holiday, vacation and sick leave, plus personal
business leave. Optional benefits include life insurance, disability
insurance, and long term care insurance.
