Thanks to all who responded. I asked how do you shelve the
restatements, and received many, many responses. They're still
trickling in. The most popular answer is to organize first by subject,
then by edition, and ignore distracting problems like multi-subject
volumes in the first edition. However, there were several other
solutions, the three most common being:
- Shelve the first edition separately, and then the second and third
together grouped by subject then edition
- Group volumes by subject and then shelve with related materials in the
library, rather than having all volumes of the restatements together (a
popular solution with libraries that use the LC classification system)
- Shelve by edition, then subject
Several people pointed out that West includes a card with the updates
that describes what a current set should look like. Helpfully, that
card is available online at
http://west.thomson.com/store/filinginstructions.aspx?product_id=557&mat
erial_num=22026005
... and suggests the volumes should be sorted by edition first, then
subject. ALI ABA also has a publication checklist on their web site at
http://www.ali.org/index.cfm?fuseaction=about.checklist
...but they recommend subject first, then edition.
At this point I'm leaning toward shelving them in random order and
intentionally mismatching pocket parts and supplements, as a
passive-aggressive method of discouraging use with the goal of trashing
the set. But I don't think the other librarians at my firm will go
along with me.
Again, thanks to all who responded.
