Hi Laura, this email isn't meant to address the main concern of your post, which is disturbing, but rather a minor comment. It could be that you have a Googlegänger. Check out http://www.americandialect.org/Word-of-the-Year_2007.pdf. Subprime was the word of the year for 2007, but Googlegänger was one of my favorites on the list. As a word nerd, it was too much for me to pass up the opportunity to mention this.
Thanks, Laurie

Subject: [LAW-LIB:55592] Another reason to Google/Dogpile yourself: "unauthorized quote lifting"
Greetings:
I was "checking up on myself" in the search engines yesterday and came across something, ah, interesting, you might say. A commercial legal research database had a "quote" of mine on its homepage inside a sidebar labeled "Testimonials." I didn't recognize the quote (no comments please from the peanut gallery), but knew I could not possibly have said it in direct relation to that specific database service since I had never used it and had never been asked to use it, let alone comment on its value.
(I'm sure it is also possible there is another Laura J. Orr, Law Librarian, but ... if one of you knows my "name twin" please let me know - I'd like to meet this person, I think. Maybe she can join us at AALL in Portland this year and buy me a beer for getting me in all this hot water - double trouble, eh?)
The link from the service's webpage to my quote was dead (links for the other "testimonial" quotes were live), though one can easily find the original source (from a law-lib post: http://listproc.ucdavis.edu/archives/law-lib/law-lib.log0209/0356.html - and I sincerely doubt I will ever rise to such eloquence again!). The original quote was said in the course of a discussion about this specific service, and type of service, but one would have to reach pretty far, without falling over a steep drop-off, to say that my statement was a product testimonial or endorsement, which is the impression given on the company's web page.
I'm sure this is not the end of the story, but for now, go forth and "search" yourself. I don't usually do a self-search more than a couple times a year, but maybe I should check in with my digital self more often. Oh joy.
