About a month ago I posed some questions about cite checking duties at
larger law firms. I received responses from 51 law firms, and got
answers to who is primarily responsible for cite checking at their firm.
At 8 firms, attorneys hold primary responsibility for their own
cite-checking
26 firms reported paralegals as holding the primary responsibility
19 firms reported librarians/library staff as those primarily
responsible
1 firm had a staff of editors who were fully responsible for cite
checking
There was some overlap in a few firms (accounting for the total being
higher than 51) where both paralegals and library staff handle this;
and/or attorneys and paralegals share the duty.
At the firms where the librarians handle most cite checking, only 7 of
those 19 firms reported that they would do any quote checking duties.
A number of respondents, inaddition to the 51 firms whose answers are
reflected above, were indefinite or unsure of the answer as to who held
primary responsibility. In these cases, their answers were not
accounted for in the survey results.
