I have one suggestion -- refuse to sign any vendor
contract that includes a confidentiality clause. As librarians, we
specialize in information and yet voluntarily restrict our ability to
share the most fundamental budgeting information with each other -- how
much does something cost? I would like to see AALL adopt a policy
against confidentiality clauses so that we do not have to battle this
issue individually. Confidentiality clauses are strictly and
completely for the benefit of the vendors -- they not only do us no good
at all, they significantly weaken our position as information consumers
and professional managers.

This is ridiculous. Pretty soon we are going to have to pay $99
for a report that used to cost us $1. It's pretty clear that AALL is
hamstrung on this kind of issue. What can we do about these things?
Do we as individual librarians need to take a more activist role? What
can we do?
