As librarians, we specialize in information and yet voluntarily restrict our ability to share the most fundamental budgeting information with each other -- how much does something cost? I would like to see AALL adopt a policy against confidentiality clauses so that we do not have to battle this issue individually. Confidentiality clauses are strictly and completely for the benefit of the vendors -- they not only do us no good at all, they significantly weaken our position as information consumers and professional managers. Pretty soon we are going to have to pay $99 for a report that used to cost us $1. It's pretty clear that AALL is hamstrung on this kind of issue. What can we do about these things? Do we as individual librarians need to take a more activist role? What can we do?
