    >From the Introduction

Traditional oriental medicine, as a remarkable medicine resource with a
long history over thousands years, has played a significant role in the
clinic therapy field. There are more than 500 examples of crude drugs from
plants recorded in the Chinese pharmacopoeia, which are not only widely
used in oriental countries such as China, Korea, and Japan but also have
gained increasable popularity worldwide even in European and North
    American countries.

The most important character of traditional oriental medicine preparations
is the comprehensive function resulted from their complicated
compositions. It is not a single ingredient but hundreds of chemically
constituents which decide the ultimate effects of these drugs. However,
only a few compounds are responsible for the beneficial function in clinic
therapy. On the contrary, it should be noted that there are inevitably
some toxic components acting as active ingredients in some cases using
traditional oriental medicines. The hazardous effects mainly focus on the
damage to kidney, liver and neural system. It is an important reason why
quality control of traditional oriental medicine is more difficult than
    that of western drugs.
