Dear law-libbers,
I'd like to share with you a recent success from the
AALL Publishing Initiatives Caucus (PIC).
As you may know, PIC's mission
is to "Inspire and motivate law librarians to write articles for legal publications
that are read by practicing attorneys, legal administrators, law professors,
judges, and others in organizations that employ AALL members."
To that
end, we've developed a relationship with
Wisconsin State Bar Communications
Director, Joyce Hastings, member of the Editors of the National Association
of Bar Executives (NABE). Joyce was the PIC VIP at the AALL Conference in
New Orleans and a speaker at the conference.
Joyce has graciously offered
to assist us with getting the word out to other bar association editors about
the benefits of law librarians as authors in bar publications. With the blessing
of the NABE Communications Section, she recently sent an e-mail to all the
NABE editors explaining how working with law librarians is a win-win situation.
She writes:
"Let's face it, as bar association communicators, our resources
for editorial development are stretched thin. We look for quality, trusted
sources of content and work to build long-term relationships with those content
providers. The state bars of Wisconsin, Virginia, and Colorado, and the New
Orleans Bar have turned to our local law librarians as a source of good editorial
content... That's why I'm excited to tell you about a new publishing partnership,
sponsored by the American Association of Law Librarians, which partners bar
editors with law librarians in your area."
Along with her email, Joyce
included a copy of the brochure that PIC has developed for editors. You can
access it at <http://www.law.wisc.edu/blogs/wisblawg/brochureforpublishers.pdf>
and it will soon be available on the PIC web site.
The PIC brochure will
also be distributed at the NABE meeting in LA in early February, thanks to
Mark Mathewson, chair of NABE Communications Section. Attendees include bar
association executives and staff specialists -- Communications, HR, Administration,
etc.
PIC has already heard from the Nebraska Bar, Hennepin County Bar,
Maricopa Bar and Bar Association of San Francisco, all of whom are interested
in working with local law librarians. PIC has helped put them in contact
with the AALL chapters in those areas. Hopefully we will get more and more
law librarians publishing in their bar publications and enhancing the value
and stature of law librarians.
As always, PIC welcomes citations to articles
that AALL members have recent published in legal publications for inclusion
in our Published Articles database <http://baseportal.com/cgi-bin/baseportal.pl?htx=/Publishing_Initiatives/main>.
Please send them to the PIC co-chairs, Carol Bannen (BANNEN@reinhartlaw.com)
or Bonnie Shucha (bjshucha@wisc.edu).
Best,
Bonnie Shucha and Carol Bannen,
PIC Co-chairs
