I have a patron looking for John B. West's date of death, and we're
having no luck finding it.
We know that he moved to California after 1912 and appears to be listed
in the 1920 US Census. Among places we have searched:
* Ancestry Library databases (the CA death index doesn't start
until 1940; we've been told West likely died around 1920)
* Biography Resource Center database
* ILP and Library Lit & Info Science current and retrospective
databases
* The LA Times online archive (found a John West obit for 1924,
but the birth year was too far off from the one we have been told is
correct-8/6/1852 in Massachusetts) and the historic NY Times
* And the most obvious: the official history of the West
Publishing Company published in 1969; the company overview and historic
highlights pages at westlaw.thomson.com; and the journals and law
reviews database. John B. West left the company in 1899.
Does anyone have the information or any further leads before we contact
the California registrar of vital records?
