Career Change

Hello everyone,
I’ve recently signed on to this listserv as I’m considering a career change and am interested in working in a law library. I have my MLS and about 6 years experience in various special, corporate, and public libraries. I have a few questions I'm hoping to get answered.

Is it truly necessary to get my JD or can you work your way up from the bottom?

I’m looking at one or two Library Assistant job to get my foot in the door. Would this be a smart approach or better to get the JD first if you feel the JD is necessary?

The past 3 years I’ve been working as a Supervisor of three branch libraries in a public library. Considering that I’m looking at Library Assistant positions what can I expect as a salary?

I started my career as a librarian in the corporate world but now I face the stigma of having spent the past thee years in a public library. Everyone seems to have a misconception about civil services and I’m constantly facing an uphill battle. What do you recommend I do to overcome these preconception?

Any assistance would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you,
Scott
