While this list will always be changing, it shows a snapshot of where
leading edge technology that chould be used in libraries is today. Some
products are in the concept stage, others can be ordered today from any
hardward supplier.

To understand the activities and technologies that facilitate information
access in the future, and the potential impact they will have on library
facilities, read on and use your imagination:

Content Sample:

  Carnegie Mellon On-Line Books Page
A directory of thousands of books that can be freely read right on the
Internet.

    GIS Maps
Demonstrates how using commonly available GIS software, it is very easy to
create a wide range of products from high resolution Spin-2 imagery.

   Information Visualization
Database tools that allow users to visualize information using concepts
not typically associated with data organization. For example, The Galaxies
uses the image of stars to represent a set of documents.

   Integrated Circuits
Producing systems-on-a-chip that incorporate both analog and digital
circuits to integrate the physical world with the world of computation.

   Library of Congress Digital Collections
Of the millions of books, photographs, prints, drawings, manuscripts, rare
books, maps, sound recordings, and moving pictures held by the Library, a
fraction are in digital form.

   MapX
Mapping software that plots a persons location onto a digital map is now
portable

"The rapid evolution of technology empowers learning and information
access, but it also comes with a high cost for implementation, operation,
and maintenance. Libraries focus on providing an optimal learning
environment, while continuing to embrace the civic role as a meeting
place for social interaction. Can a library for the information age
integrate technology to enhance all these activities? This design
solution will show the answer IS YES.

A technology-based mobile unit that brings state-of-the-art equipment and
operating personnel to remote library locations provides the key. Combing
the historical functions of bookmobiles, but overlaying the most
sophisticated technological developments available, entire library
districts can now become exciting places of interactive learning,
collaboration, and social events."
