More on Hall of Fame...

A big thank you goes out to Brent Johnson for sending out the email.
To my colleagues who have been emailing me and asking if I have really
been inducted into the U.S.A.
Martial Arts Hall of Fame, the answer is yes.

No, I wasn’t voted as the toughest, but the most dedicated martial
artist of the year, and I attribute my recognition to the great team I
have the privilege of working with. My assistant instructors wanted to
follow the FISH! Philosophy and helped make the martial arts school
fun and exciting, bring in innovative instructors, share great ideas,
etc. Many of our adult students are leaders in the community and
served as mentors to our at-risk teenagers. Our biggest highlight was
expanding our scholarship program to go beyond martial arts lessons
and send one of our students who graduated from high school to
college. He joined our classes while attending the local alternative
high school for at-risk teens and went on to become the first in his
family to attend college.

More on Brent and SaraJean...

Brent Johnson is a silent force to be reckoned with. He played
basketball on his high school team and then graduated at the top of
his Wentworth Military Academy class. As a former athlete and cadet,
it’s no surprise that Brent became knowledgeable on recreational and
sports activities at National & State Parks for ideas to help keep
himself fit. Also, Brent has some combatives training and even trained
with Kelly Worden, who used to be the primary Impact and Edged Weapon
Instructor for the 1st Special Forces Group at Ft. Lewis, Washington.

SaraJean Petite is an awesome swimmer and all around athlete. Just a
couple of days ago, she took part in the Cleveland Triathlon. Imagine
having to bike 17 miles, run a 5K, and then swim 700 yards in open
water (equivalent of swimming 14 times back and forth across the width
of an Olympic sized pool). Whew, I could probably do that given plenty
of breaks and maybe a day or two of rest, but wait, SaraJean did all
that back to back within two hours and finished third in her category!

More on Tough Librarians and Their Day Jobs...

While the presentation spent some time discussing how our librarian
skills helped our activities, I want to stress that our involvement in
our activities also improved our librarianship. For me, it was also an
extension of my desire to learn and improve many leadership,
management, and information professional skills. I was able to start
and run a small business, negotiate wholesale inventory arrangements,
manage sales, develop and manage budget, create websites and be in
charge of marketing. I also led the strategic planning process to
increase enrollment in classes, improve student services, and create a
national reputation in certain martial arts specialties. Yes, being a
tough librarian has also made me a better librarian.

If you have any other questions, please feel free to contact me,
Brent, or SaraJean. I'll be out of the office the last part of this
week but will respond within a couple of days.

Thank you,
Andrew
